WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga is usually defined as union. The term yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "yug" which means to yoke or bind together. Yoga is enlightenment. Yoga is the experience of bliss that lies beyond the veil of thought. A comprehensive yoga practice uses the mind (meditation), the body (posture or asana), and the spirit (Bhakti) to shed the layers that stand between us and our hearts – where knowledge and truth transform into wisdom and happiness. We don't do yoga instead yoga is the practice and the goal. We do practices that may lead to yoga.
HOW MANY TIMES A WEEK SHOULD I TAKE CLASS?
We promote a daily practice, but patience is paramount! For those just starting, move from once to twice a week and then, gradually, increase to three. Practicing around five times is a week is a beautiful goal.
DO I HAVE TO BE YOUNG TO PRACTICE YOGA?
No, there are yoga practitioners of all ages. Yoga opposes no one and definitely no age group! Of course, flexibility and strength changes over time but with patience and consistent practice, everyone's health and well-being improves, as does the proficiency in the postures that is right for you.
WHAT IF I CAN'T DO EVERY POSTURE?
There is no requirement and, believe it or not, no one's keeping score! Your most important tool is instead your breath. If you find your breath has become rushed, overly exhaustive, or you lost it altogether, pause a moment and take your time, watch the other students. Besides, no one can do every posture (there are thousands of yoga asanas!).
I CAN'T TOUCH MY TOES
Again, definitely not a requirement. Your mind must be flexible before your body is!
DO I HAVE TO BE A VEGETARIAN TO PRACTICE YOGA?
Ahimsa, or non-harming, is the first limb of Ashtanga Yoga and the foundation of a strong, life transforming yoga practice is clearly non-violence. A diet free of animal products is such a practice and greatly reduces mass suffering - but everybody is doing the best they can. No one can force a food decision on you. With information and observing how various foods make you feel when you practice, you are able to make an educated decision based on what is best for you.
IS YOGA A RELIGION?
No, yoga is a philosophy. The practice of yoga is a system that enhances the spiritual essence of all faiths. Practitioners come from many varied beliefs and all walks of life. We advocate an open mind and practice inter-faith tolerance.
WHY DO WE CHANT?
Anytime we want to be inspired, whether we are at a sporting event, a spiritual service, a rock concert, or in the shower, some type of singing is involved. The singing helps us to transcend the ordinary and tap into our divine, vibrating nature.
